March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM), a time to celebrate the contributions of people with developmental disabilities and to promote inclusion, independence, and accessibility. Across the country, organizations, advocates, and communities come together to raise awareness about the challenges and achievements of individuals with disabilities, ensuring their voices are heard and valued.

At Opportunity Village, this mission is at the heart of everything we do. For over 70 years, we have been dedicated to serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to help them live the best version of their lives. From day habilitation and pre-vocational training to job placement and residential communities, our programs are designed to support individuals in achieving their personal and professional goals.

This March, we are celebrating DDAM by sharing the incredible journeys of individuals who have benefitted from Opportunity Village’s services. These stories highlight the impact of our programs and the determination, talent, and resilience of the people we serve. Whether through skill-building programs, job training, or supportive community living, each story is a testament to the importance of inclusion and empowerment.

Opportunity Village’s Commitment to Inclusion and Independence

Since our founding in Las Vegas in 1954, Opportunity Village has championed the rights and abilities of individuals with IDD. Our programs serve high school students transitioning into adulthood as well as adults seeking employment, independence, and community engagement. By offering a range of services tailored to different abilities and aspirations, we help people discover their strengths and pursue meaningful careers and lifestyles.

Day Habilitation Programs

Our day habilitation enrichment programs provide individuals with daily activities that encourage social interaction, creativity, and skill development. Through art, music, and recreational activities, participants gain confidence and enjoy a sense of community.

Pre-Vocational and Job Training Experiences

We offer hands-on learning experiences that prepare individuals for the workforce. Participants learn essential job skills, workplace etiquette, and responsibility through structured training and support.

Job Placement Opportunities

Employment is a key factor in promoting independence and self-worth. Opportunity Village partners with businesses throughout Las Vegas to connect qualified candidates with meaningful job opportunities.

Independent Living Community

Our residential community, Betty’s Village, provides safe and supportive housing where residents can thrive while maintaining their autonomy.

Through these programs, we are not just offering services—we are creating pathways to success and a more inclusive community.

The Importance of Community Involvement

Raising awareness about developmental disabilities is not just about recognizing challenges—it’s about celebrating strengths and fostering a society where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. Businesses, educators, and community leaders all play a role in creating inclusive environments where people with disabilities can thrive.

Opportunity Village works closely with local businesses and organizations to expand employment opportunities for individuals with IDD. By hiring people with disabilities, companies gain hardworking, dedicated employees while promoting diversity and inclusivity. Community members can also contribute by volunteering at Opportunity Village events, supporting fundraising efforts, or simply advocating for greater accessibility and understanding in their daily interactions.

This month, we encourage everyone to take action—whether that means learning more about developmental disabilities, reaching out to support someone in their community, or encouraging inclusive hiring practices in the workplace. Small efforts add up to create meaningful change.
