When supporting adults with disabilities, the most valuable thing we can do is to help empower them with the tools, skills, and accessibility they need to thrive.

Day programs are designed for adults with developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and physical disabilities. They are community-based programs that help them find opportunities to explore their strengths while learning vital daily life skills. At day programs, they engage with the community, learn skills to help them be more independent, and have a safe and fun place to connect and make friends.

A day program for adults with disabilities is a great option to add to an individualized care program. If you are considering a day program, here is everything you need to know.

What Are Nevada Day Programs For Adults With Disabilities?

Day programs are designed for both adults with developmental disabilities and their caregivers. Much like going to a job, school, or an adult day care, adults go to day habilitation programs every day for a set number of hours each day.

However, the schedule is flexible based on the care needs of the individual. At a day program, there are structured activities and service programs aimed to enhance the quality of life for participants, promote independence, and support socialization and community involvement.

Depending on the individual’s needs, there are a range of activities they may do at a day program, including:

  • Life Skills Development: Participants receive training in activities of daily living, such as cooking, cleaning, and personal hygiene.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation And Training: Programs offer training and support to help participants learn job skills, find employment opportunities, and/or return to work.
  • Educational Programs: Programs offer classes on topics from health and wellness to financial management to computer skills.
  • Social Activities: Participants do arts and crafts, play games, and go on group outings to promote social skills and community integration.
  • Therapy And Medical Services: Participants receive outpatient occupational, physical, or speech therapy and have access to medical services as needed.

When you attend a day program, the program director, case manager, and caretaking team work together to develop a program that best serves the individual’s needs.

Who Qualifies To Attend Day Programs In Nevada?

Eligibility for day programs for adults with disabilities is determined by the Nevada Division of Aging and Disability Services (ADSD) and the Division of Health Care Financing and Policy (DHCFP). To qualify for these programs, individuals must be at least 18 years old, residents of Nevada, and have a physical or intellectual disability that significantly impairs their ability to function independently in the community. They must also take a functional assessment.

How Do Day Programs Help Teach Daily Living Skills To Adults With Disabilities?

Disability specialists, including people with disabilities, design the curriculum of day programs. Day programs have a lot of daily activities for adults with developmental disabilities that teach daily living skills. Daily living skills are the essential activities of daily living necessary to live independently and care for oneself.

These skills include a wide variety of tasks, including personal hygiene, cooking, cleaning, managing finances, and using transportation. Day programs teach daily living skills in a number of ways:

  • Structured Activities: Day programs often offer structured activities like cooking and nutrition classes, cleaning and laundry, personal hygiene, and money management classes.
  • Individualized Care Plan: Day programs create an individualized care plan for each participant that outlines their specific goals and needs related to daily living skills. Care plans are developed based on functional assessments and input from the participant and their family, ensuring the program addresses their unique needs.
  • Modeling: Day program direct support professionals (DSP) can model appropriate behavior and skills for participants. For example, a DSP can demonstrate how to cook a meal or how to clean a bathroom. Then, they provide opportunities for participants to practice these skills themselves.
  • Reinforcement: Participants can be reinforced for practicing and mastering new skills. Support can include verbal praise, rewards, or other positive reinforcement techniques that encourage participants to continue practicing and developing their skills.
  • Collaboration: Day programs can work collaboratively with other service providers, such as occupational, physical, and vocational rehabilitation therapists, to ensure that participants receive coordinated and comprehensive care. This approach can help participants develop and maintain daily living skills over time.

The day program experience is different for each adult based on their particular needs. However, no matter what they are learning, they are supported by helpful staff in a community of friends.
